Doing a doctorate at FH Aachen
Starting a career in science?
Civil engineers today work in many areas of research and science, for example to optimise technical processes or develop new innovative technologies. Aspects such as resource conservation, environmental and climate protection and digitalisation play a very important role in this. Master's graduates from FH Aachen have two routes to a doctorate:
- Cooperative doctorate
The doctorate is carried out in cooperation with a university or college authorised to award doctorates. - Promotionskolleg NRW
The doctorate takes place in a structured doctoral programme in accordance with the doctoral college NRW's own doctoral law(www.pknrw.de).
The Doctoral College NRW (PK NRW) was founded in December 2020 and is supported by 21 universities for applied research / universities of applied sciences (HAW/FH) in North Rhine-Westphalia. At the end of last year, it was granted the right to award doctorates by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Construction and Culture Section is one of a total of eight specialised sections of the PK NRW. It combines the subject areas of civil engineering, architecture and cultural studies. In the field of civil engineering, research topics range from geotechnical, water management and building materials issues to new developments in the field of mobility and technical and structural infrastructure, as well as research work in the fields of building economics, building technology, timber construction and structural engineering. The focus is on application-oriented research work.
Doing a doctorate with the Construction and Culture Section means intensive and targeted supervision of the doctoral project by a team of three professors. As part of the doctoral programme, various seminars, workshops and a lecture series are offered to enable further qualification of specialist and research skills. A full-day research colloquium is held once a year to promote the professional exchange of all doctoral students in the Section.
