Meeting of welding engineers (SFI)
For over 35 years, the "Joining and Cutting Technology, Laser Technology" subject area at FH Aachen has been responsible for the welding technology training of students in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at FH Aachen. In addition to teaching technical content, the aim has always been to create identification with FH Aachen and to arouse enthusiasm for welding technology. As a result, students and graduates of the FH Aachen repeatedly complete additional training as welding engineers (SFI), thus remaining connected to the subject area in their profession and, not least, keeping in touch with the staff of the subject area. Since 2014, FH Aachen has been organising an alumni meeting for former students and SFI's in order to exchange expertise and maintain contacts.
8th SFI Alumni Meeting at the FH Aachen on 27 September 2024
On 27 September 2024, the SFI alumni meeting took place for the eighth time at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at FH Aachen. In addition to the "alumni", the more than 50 participants again included interested
students, so that the "new generation" could exchange ideas with experienced SFI. After the welcome by the head of the subject area, Prof. Schleser, 2 lectures by our alumni followed:
- "Applied welding technology at Otto Junker China"; Edgar Fokin, M.Sc.; Vice-President Research and Development; Otto Junker GmbH
- "Production monitoring of pressure equipment at TÜV SÜD Chemie Service"; Dipl.-Ing. (FH), MBA Sadik Nebbo; Group Leader PEI-QS-LEV; TÜV SÜD Chemie Service GmbH
Afterwards, in an informal atmosphere, shared memories were revived, new contacts were made and one or two project ideas were developed.
7th SFI Alumni Meeting at the FH Aachen on 29 September 2023
On 29/09/2023, the 7th alumni meeting took place at the faculty for former students with SFI training. Not only alumni were invited to the event with over 50 participants, but also interested students of the faculty in order to bring future graduates together with experienced SFI's in welding technology.
The welcome by the head of the subject area, Prof Schleser, was followed by three presentations by our alumni:
- Thomas Zerbst, M. Eng, IWE at Mayr & Wilhelm GmbH & Co KG, Buchholz i. d. Nordheide gave a presentation on "Welding of copper-aluminium multi-material systems"
- Florian Kessel, M. Eng, IWE at Talbot Services GmbH, Aachen gave a lecture on "Welding in rail vehicle construction"
- Stefan Rohleder, M. Eng, IWE at Lorch Schweißtechnik GmbH presented the topic "Calibrated power sources - and other ways to reduce process-related fluctuations in production".
Afterwards, in an informal atmosphere, shared memories were revived, new contacts were made and one or two project ideas were developed.
6th SFI Alumni Meeting at the FH Aachen on 23 September 2022
On 23 September 2022, the alumni SFI meeting at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics (FB8) at FH Aachen took place for the 6th time with around 40 participants. Not only alumi, i.e. graduates of the faculty, but also students of FB8 who are currently completing the SFI course parallel to their studies were invited to bring them together with experienced SFI's in welding technology.
The welcome by the head of the subject area, Prof Schleser, was followed by two alumni presentations:
- Lukas Grießner, M.Eng., SFI gave a presentation on "Blowing effect in MSG welding on copper substrates".
- Dr Christian Otten, SFI, Executive Director of LaVa-X GmbH, gave a presentation on "Laser beam welding in a vacuum - industrial implementations by LaVa-X GmbH".
Afterwards, in a relaxed atmosphere in the welding laboratory, shared memories were revived, new contacts were made and one or two project ideas were developed.
5th SFI Alumni Meeting at the FH Aachen on 05 July 2019
On 5 July 2019, the SFI alumni meeting at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics took place for the 5th time with around 40 participants. In addition to the "alumni", students of the faculty who are currently completing the SFI course parallel to their studies were also invited to bring together prospective graduates with experienced SFI's in welding technology.
The welcome address by the head of the subject area, Prof Schleser, was followed by two specialist presentations by alumni: Alexander Berk, M.Sc., IWE, from SR Technics Group (Ireland) gave a presentation on "Using 3D printing to support welding technology". Carsten Faber, B. Eng., IWE, from Faymonville AG (Luxembourg) spoke about "Welding automation in the production of heavy-duty vehicles".
Afterwards, in a relaxed atmosphere in the welding laboratory, shared memories were revived, new contacts were made and one or two project ideas were developed. We are already looking forward to the next meeting!
4th SFI Alumni Meeting at the FH Aachen on 22 June 2018
On 22 June 2018, the SFI alumni meeting at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics took place for the 4th time. With more than 30 participants, the event was a complete success. In addition to the "alumni", students of the faculty who are currently completing the SFI course parallel to their studies were also invited to bring together prospective UAS graduates with experienced SFI's in welding technology.
The welcome address by the head of the subject area, Prof. Schleser, was followed by two specialist presentations by alumni: Andreas Huppertz, M. Eng., SFI at Quast Anlagentechnik GmbH (Eschweiler) gave a presentation on "Welding in apparatus and tank construction". Christian Klocke, M. Eng., SFI at Talbot Services GmbH (Aachen) gave a lecture on "Welding in railway vehicle construction".
Afterwards, in a relaxed atmosphere in the welding laboratory, shared memories were revived, new contacts were made and one or two project ideas were developed. We are already looking forward to the 5th meeting in 2019!
