ERP, IMS, MQTT: Behind these abbreviations stand terms that could be exemplary for the business world of tomorrow. What Enterprise Resource Planning, Industrial Mechatronic System and Message Queuing Telemetry Transport exactly mean and how to use these tools, 19 students learned at the one-week Industry 4.0 Summer School held by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics from 27 August to 1 September 2018.

The term Industry 4.0 refers to the idea of comprehensively digitising industrial production. Through the use of modern information and communication technology, efficiency gains are to be achieved, the extent of which could be comparable to the previous three industrial revolutions. The model factory, which Prof. Dr. Jörg Wollert and his team have set up in the FH rooms at Aachener-und-Münchner-Allee, exemplifies approaches to research and development in the field of Industry 4.0. The participants of the summer school took the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the facilities of the model factory. The programme for the week included lectures and practical exercises in equal measure. At the end, the students presented the devices they had designed during the week. There was also the opportunity to take a written exam.

The summer school was led by Prof. Wollert, supported by Jessica Ulmer and Sebastian Braun.
