Laboratories
IBB has high-performance laboratories with modern equipment at its disposal for its activities. These laboratories are equipped with the necessary equipment for a wide range of mechanical and physical tests on building materials, components and connections. They include testing machines for compression, tensile and bending tests with test forces of up to 5000 kN, test frames for tests on large-format components, test stands for long-term tests, special testing equipment for timber construction, testing equipment for frost and weathering tests and much more. All of this includes high-quality measurement technology, for example to precisely record the entire load-deformation behaviour of components.
The Steel Construction Lab
The Steel Construction Lab, integrated into the IBB, is equipped with a test frame that allows for tests on large component parts. Currently, the focus of research is on testing crane and rail fastening systems under static and dynamic loading. In addition, there is intensive research and development in the field of stability endangered and thin-walled component parts. Recently, two cooperative PhD positions could be created for this purpose.

The Building Material Lab
Civil engineers in the field of construction engineering design, calculate and size the diverse structures of building construction and civil engineering. A wide range of structures is covered - from residential and commercial buildings to schools and hospitals as well as complex engineering structures such as bridges, tunnels or sluices.
In order to achieve a building contruction that is economically viable, technically faultless, ecologically sensible as well as aesthetically pleasing, civil engineers have a wealth of building materials and construction methods at their disposal nowadays. Nonetheless, the potential has not yet been fully exploited.
The Wood Construction Lab
In the field of wood construction, the IBB deals with, among other things, innovative connections on the basis of bonded and hybrid joints in due consideration of non-linear stiffnesses. Other current topics are hygrothermal analyses as well as dynamics with regard to timber constructions. At the same time, long-term tests on compression columns with building practical dimensions are presently being conducted under natural alternating climate conditions as well.
