Main Research Areas
Solar Thermal Systems and Hydrogen System Technology
Technologies that improve the flexibility of the demand-oriented provision of heat and electricity will become increasingly important in energy systems with a high percentage of renewable energies. We develop components such, for example, high-temperature storage tanks, we create overall concepts and simulate their use.
Energy Storage Systems
The key topic for our future energy supply system will be energy storage. The energy transition will only be successful if the power generated can be intelligently stored, converted and transported. With its innovative storage concepts the SIJ is already making an important contribution to a reliable energy supply.
Efficient Building and Systems Technology
The largest share of our energy consumption is needed for heating, cooling, ventilating and lighting our buildings. The development and implementation of innovative ideas for new and old buildings as well as for industrial processes is indispensable for a significant reduction of our CO2 emissions. Together with partners from planning, industry and building operations, new products are being developed, new concepts elaborated and implemented and, among other things, demonstration buildings thoroughly tested with our measurement technology.
Intelligent Energy Supply Systems
A sustainable energy supply with a high level of system security can only succeed if there is intelligent interaction between energy generation, consumption, storage and distribution. Our projects, in which model regions are analysed and future scenarios developed with the help of intelligent software, make a contribution to this.
In addition, we have been working with the Fraunhofer IEG since 2021 in designing the climate-neutral energy systems of the future.
