FAQ

Questions & answers on examination modalities

Where can I find the examination dates?

Each year we offer three examination periods:
> the examination phase at the end of the summer semester takes place in June/July,
> the examination phase at the beginning of the winter semester takes place in September,
> the examination phase at the end of the winter semester takes place in January/February.

Please note that not every examination is offered in every examination period.
> The examinations of the modules that are only offered in the winter semester take place at the end of the winter semester and at the end of the summer semester.
> The examinations of the modules that are only offered in the summer semester take place at the end of the summer semester and at the beginning of the winter semester.
> If a course is offered in both the winter semester and the summer semester,
then the examinations take place in all three examination periods.

The current examination dates can be found on the Examination Dates subpage.

Are there admission requirements for examinations?

Admission requirements apply to certain examinations. For example, you must have passed the course Business Mathematics and Statistics 1 in order to take Business Mathematics 2 from the second semester and Statistics 2 from the third semester.

Further admission requirements can be found in the Examination Regulations for your degree programme.

Registration

You can only take an examination if you have registered and been admitted. The registration requirement for participation in an examination is independent of the examination form and applies to written examinations, assignments, presentations or other examination forms.

Registration is always done online via HIS QIS. For this purpose, you need the access data of your university account of the FH Aachen.

If you have problems with the registration via HIS QIS, please contact the examination office.

Problems are sometimes reported to us by attempted registrations for improvement examinations which are not undertaken immediately in the examination period after the first examination attempt but only in the second or third examination period thereafter. These registrations can only be made on site at the Examinations Office.

Admission to examinations

Before taking the examination, please check whether you have been admitted to an examination. Immediately after registering, you can call up the menu "Info on registered examinations" via HIS QIS in your personal examination administration and check the status of the registrations.

Withdrawal from examinations

You can withdraw from examinations in due time up to eight days before the respective examination date. You can withdraw online on HIS QIS or in person during opening hours at the examination office or by email to pruefungssekretariat(at)wirtschaft.fh-aachen.de.

After this date, withdrawal is only possible with the form for proof of incapacity for examination due to illness (medical certificate). You can find this form in the download area: https://www.fh-aachen.de/downloads/studierende/antraege-und-vordrucke/allgemein. Select Proof of incapacity for examination due to illness (medical certificate).

Other medical certificates are not accepted.

The notification must be made immediately, i.e. in principle no later than the end of the third working day of the Examination Secretariat after the day of the examination.

Do not put any certificates in the letterbox at the building! This is not necessarily emptied daily.

Please be sure to note your student ID number, the module number and the module name on the certificate.

The attestation must be sent to the following address:

FH Aachen
Faculty of Business Studies
Examination Office
Eupener Straße 70
52066 Aachen

Repeating examination achievements

In accordance with § 21 of the General Examination Regulations (RPO), the following rules apply:

(1) The final thesis (Bachelor's or Master's thesis) and the colloquium may each be repeated once in the event of failure.

(2) A failed examination may be repeated twice. If the special character of a degree programme or an examination requires it, the respective Examination Regulations may exceptionally provide that a failed examination may only be repeated once. This applies, for example, to the degree programme International Business Studies. In the case of module examinations consisting of several examination elements, the Examination Regulations may stipulate that only the entire module examination may be repeated.

(3) A passed examination may not be repeated except in connection with an attempt at improvement pursuant to § 20 of the RPO.

How many attempts do I have for an examination in my Bachelor degree programme?

There are three examination attempts for each examination in the national Bachelor's degree programmes and the degree programme Global Business and Economics. In the international degree programme International Business Studies there are only two examination attempts.
Information on this can be found in the Examination Regulations for your degree programme.

Can I improve my examination achievements?

You are allowed to improve a total of three passed examination achievements during your studies. The improvement attempt must be made within three examination periods from the first attempt.

For example, if you passed an examination achievement in June/July 2016, then you have the last opportunity to improve the examination achievement in June/July 2017. (The examination period in September is always counted towards this).

Publication of the results

The examination results are published no later than six weeks after the respective examination achievements. You can view your grades in HIS QIS.

Exam Inspections

We grant you access to the written examination documents. The examination office publishes the dates for the examinations of the core studies. If you would like to inspect specialisation examinations, please ask the examiners directly.

You can find out the dates of the inspections on the subpage Examination Inspections. If you have questions for the examiner, but the examiner is not present at the inspection, please inform the supervising person immediately after the inspection so that your exam assignment can be forwarded to the examiners.

If you are prevented for an important reason from attending the dates we have specified, you can authorise a substitute who has already passed the examination with us to inspect your documents with a power of attorney issued by you. Proof that this person has already passed the examination must be provided by submitting the grade transcript. Further inspections than on the published dates will not be granted. More than one proxy per person will not be accepted.

Behaviour in exams

Punctual appearance

You alone are responsible for your punctual appearance at examinations. Even if you arrive late for an examination due to weather conditions or delays in public transport, the elapsed examination time will be at your expense. The supervisor in the examination room will not grant you an extension of time, nor will we cancel your examination registration.

Duty of identification

Your identity will be checked at the beginning of the examination. For this purpose, you will need an official ID card with a photo and a valid student ID card. Please have both forms of ID ready before the start of your written examination. The identity check will take place at your seat after the exam has started.

Resources

Only those aids that have been announced as permissible are to be carried and used. The examiners decide on the permitted aids. Other aids, in particular mobile phones, may neither be used nor brought into the examination room. In case of violation, an attempt at cheating may be counted.

Only the examination papers provided by the university may be used. Using one's own paper will be counted as an attempt at cheating.

If calculators are permitted as aids, the following generally applies:

Permitted are simple, non-programmable scientific calculators with four basic arithmetic operations, percentage calculation functions, powers, roots, logarithms, trigonometric functions, simple statistical functions, constant memory. Not permitted are calculators that offer the following options: programmability, graphic displays, text storage, other mathematical, economic or alphanumeric functions that are permanently installed or can be switched on via external data carriers.

Mobile phones, smartwatches, internet-enabled watches, etc.

A mobile phone, a smartphone, an internet-enabled watch or a watch that can be connected to a smartphone are among the tools not allowed during examinations. Its use is strictly prohibited. Examination law speaks of attempted cheating in addition to cheating that was actually undertaken and discovered. This means that carrying a mobile phone, for example, can be considered an attempt to cheat. Therefore, the urgent request to all examination candidates: Leave your mobile phone etc. at home.

If you cannot do without your mobile phone, at least make sure that the device is switched off (silent is not sufficient, some mobile phones emit an acoustic signal despite the "silent" setting). Do not carry the mobile phone with you under any circumstances, but put it in your bag and deposit the bag in the examination room far out of your reach.

Anyone carrying a mobile phone must ensure that no one is disturbed by sudden acoustic signals. The Examination Board will not draw any consequences from a mobile phone ringing, no matter how long it lasts (neither credit of a failed attempt for the mobile phone owner nor improvement attempt or non-grading of the examination for other candidates).

Deception

Anyone who intentionally violates a regulation (e.g. use of unauthorised aids) is committing an administrative offence. The administrative offence can be punished with a fine of up to 50,000 euros. In the event of multiple or other serious attempts at deception, the candidate may also be deregistered.

Carrying out the exams

After the supervisor has handed out the exam papers to you, please check their completeness using the information on the cover sheet.

Please enter your student ID number as well as your first and last name on the cover sheet and, if applicable, on the solution sheets.

Please read the instructions for the written examination before you start working on the tasks and find out which aids are permitted. Please stow any unauthorised aids in your bag and place them out of your reach.

Pay close attention to the instructions of the supervisor and communicate only with him/her. If a candidate disturbs the orderly process of an examination, e.g. by loud talking or other behavioural conspicuities, he/she can be excluded from the continuation of the examination by the supervisor after a warning. In this case, the examination/academic achievement will be assessed with the grade "not sufficient".

Leaving the examination room

During the written examination, the examination room may not be left (not even to go to the toilet) without handing in the examination papers and signing the list of participants. Anyone who has handed in the examination papers may no longer take part in this part of the examination.

If you have finished working on the examination before the time for handing it in, you may hand in your examination papers and leave the examination room quietly. Make sure that you hand in your examination papers in full. Anyone who takes the examination papers handed out, copies or photographs them is attempting to cheat.

Abandonment of examinations for acute reasons of illness

Should an examination be abandoned for reasons of illness (withdrawal after the start of the examination), this examination attempt cannot be counted as a failed attempt only if the following conditions are met:

> The candidate immediately informs the supervisor, hands in the
examination documents and has the form for the proof of illness handed out by the supervisor or the examination office.

> The candidate immediately (on the same day) seeks medical treatment.

> The attending doctor certifies that the candidate is acutely incapacitated for the examination.

> The medical certificate describing the acute physical or psychological effects of the illness is immediately submitted to the Examination Board so that it can check whether the candidate is unable to take the examination.

> The form for the proof of illness completed by the doctor and the student is submitted to the Examination Board without delay.

> The Examination Board accepts the reasons given (fluctuations in daily form, exam anxiety, exam stress, etc. are not legally significant impairments).

According to case law, if a student starts an examination knowing that he/she is ill, he/she assumes the associated risk and cannot avoid a failed attempt by invoking the illness known to him/her in advance.

If the Examination Office identifies further examinations that fall within the above-mentioned period, these will also be cancelled by the responsible Examination Office with this certificate.

Here you will find the form for the proof of incapacity to take examinations due to illness (medical certificate).
