Doctoral supervision and membership of the Doctoral College NRW (PK NRW)
To be able to supervise a doctorate via the Doctoral College NRW (PK NRW), you must be a member of the PK NRW. Requirements and criteria can be found in the membership regulations and in the FAQs of the PK NRW . There are currently 28 professors at FH Aachen who are members of PK NRW.
The admission of new professorial members and associate professors has been possible again since 12 April. Applications must be submitted via the IT system of the PK NRW (application portal). Members or associates who have already been accepted do not need to submit a new application.
Further information: PK NRW - Admission of professorial members and associate professors possible again | UAS internal information and checklist on how the university management and administration can help you with the application process,
On 17 November 2023, Economics Minister Ina Brandes awarded the NRW Doctoral College the right to award doctorates at a ceremony in Essen on behalf of the 21 state or state-funded "Universities of Applied Sciences" (HAWs, universities of applied sciences). In future, cooperation with universities will no longer be mandatory for students wishing to do a doctorate. From spring 2023, the PK NRW will carry out independent doctoral examination processes and award doctoral degrees as the superordinate institution of the HAWs. It will thus offer a central quality assurance body and a comprehensive qualification programme for doctorates at all UASs.
The Doctoral College NRW was founded in December 2020. It is organised into eight sections, which are structured according to subject. The right to award doctorates will apply equally and indefinitely to all sections. Students do a doctorate at the college in structured programmes and with the support of experienced professors from all member universities in NRW. This was preceded by a comprehensive evaluation and positive assessment by the German Council of Science and Humanities. In its statement on 8 July 2022 on the "Doctoral College for Applied Research at Universities of Applied Sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia" (Doctoral College NRW) , the German Council of Science and Humanities recommended granting it the right to award doctorates.

Supervision agreement Cooperative doctorate
FH Aachen recommends the conclusion of a supervision agreement between professorial supervisors at FH Aachen and their doctoral candidates. Special emphasis is placed on creating excellent conditions for the qualification of scientists at the beginning of their career. Excellent supervision of doctoral candidates within the framework of a transparent and binding organisation of the doctoral phase promotes the development of highly qualified academics. You will soon find a template that you can design according to the needs and framework conditions of your doctoral candidates and yourself here.
If the doctoral project is carried out with the PK NRW, please use the PK NRW supervision agreement template.

Research Data Management FDM
Saving, sharing and archiving research data: Research data management
Data from scientific work is research data. You can find an overview of various research data management topics here.
Further information on RDM:
- On the page Research Data Management of Innovation Transfer you will find, for example, a podcast on RDM - what is it and why is it important, updated IVT handouts on the topics of open access or transfer of results and utilisation plan.
- In the ILIAS area Research Data Management here (Login in ILIAS). The range of information material on the subject of RDM will be successively expanded here.
You can upload your research data with your FH Aachen employee ID via the RDM platform Coscine. Coscince offers the opportunity to share research data securely with project partners in an NRW research data repository and to store and archive it in the long term.
