What could your career as an electrical engineer look like?
Job opportunities & career prospects
The shortage of skilled labour is particularly high in the engineering professions. However, as electrical engineers are urgently needed, graduates of an electrical engineering degree programme have a wide range of career opportunities and, according to absolventa, can expect attractive starting salaries averaging between 43,500 euros (Bachelor) and 47,500 euros (Master).
Starting salaries are currently particularly high in the automation technology specialisation.
Many managers of large industrial groups have also first learnt an engineering profession and benefit in their management positions from the fact that they have gained specific experience in technology, development and project management. According to a VDE survey, 21 of the young professionals surveyed already have personnel responsibility after an average of 4 years, and a further 40 per cent expect to be given personnel responsibility within the next 3 years.
Many electrical engineering students already work as well-paid student trainees during their studies and are subsequently taken on. It is also not uncommon for practical projects and bachelor theses to lead to initial career steps.
But it's not just about good career prospects and attractive starting salaries. Electrical engineers do a lot for our society: using resources sensibly, e-mobility, well thought-out energy supply, smart heating systems. Engineers are looking for solutions to the major problems of our time in many jobs and professions. According to the VDE survey, 67 per cent also consider their work to be varied and creative.
Continuing your studies after your Bachelor's degree
The Electrical Engineering degree programme with orientation semesters qualifies students for a Master's degree programme in Electrical Engineering with 7 semesters and 210 ECTS. "Electrical Engineering" with a Bachelor of Engineering degree enables our students to complete a professionally qualifying, fast-track degree programme that enables them to work successfully and effectively in industry. It is also possible to enter professional life part-time after completing the Bachelor's degree and to qualify for management positions with the Master's programme at the same time.
Being an engineer - becoming a teacher
Both experienced engineers and prospective engineers have the opportunity to become a teacher at a vocational college . The Master of Education (M. Ed.) is usually required as a degree for a professional career in teaching at vocational colleges. Teacher training programmes are currently only offered at universities in Germany.
In cooperation , FH Aachen and RWTH Aachen University offer the programme "Lehramt BK - Ingenieur:in sein, Lehrer:in werden". The cooperation between the two universities enables students and graduates of FH Aachen to join the Master 's degree programme for teaching at vocational colleges at RWTH Aachen University after completing their Bachelor's degree. Thanks to the practical training of an engineering degree programme at a university of applied sciences, these students and graduates in particular are excellently prepared for the teaching profession at a vocational college for technology. Information on the occupational field of teaching at vocational colleges can be found in the brochure "Der Lehrerberuf am Berufskolleg: Voraussetzungen, Ausbildung, Perspektiven" published by the Ministry of Schools and Further Training NRW.
