Brochure on the results of the first DEAL contracts

In a recent publication, the Germany-wide DEAL consortium presents the groundbreaking successes of its first contract phase with the publishers Wiley and Springer Nature. The newly published infographic brochure provides a comprehensive insight into the background, goals and results of the DEAL initiative.

Since the start of the first contract phase in 2019, DEAL has made great progress in the area of open access publishing and the provision of information to German institutions with scientific journals. The brochure uses detailed key figures and developments over the last four to five years to show how the DEAL contracts have successfully realised the consortium's goals.

A particular focus is on the enormous increase in Open Access publications. More than 105,000 publications from German scientific institutions will be published under the DEAL agreements between 2019 and 2023, 97 per cent of which will be open access. This remarkable success has led to two thirds of all research results from Germany being freely accessible worldwide - a significant increase on the 30 percent before the DEAL initiative began.

The brochure also emphasises how DEAL has increased reading opportunities for participating institutions while reducing the overall cost of scientific publications. This is an important breakthrough given the ever-increasing expenditure on scientific journals up to that point.
