Loan Period & Renewal
The loan period is usually four or two weeks for periodical volumes. Please always observe the end of the loan period stated on your loan receipt. Only the deadline stated there is binding! Fees are due on the first day that the loan period is exceeded.
Three days before the loan period expires, you will automatically receive an email reminder that the borrowed items must be returned or renewed. Despite the email service, please check the end of the loan period of your media yourself.
You can renew items at any time at your own convenience online in your library account. After renewal, please always check the new due date.
Alternatively, you can renew your items in person at the library or by telephone during service hours.
A loan period renewal is not possible,
- if the media item has reached the maximum renewal period of 24 weeks.
- if the media item has been reserved.
- if the media item was ordered via interlibrary loan and the lending library does not allow a renewal of the loan period.
- if your account has been blocked.
You must present the media to the library after 24 weeks at the latest.

Return (-box)
Self-service terminals are available in all branch libraries for you to return items on your own. Alternatively, you can hand in your media items to our staff during service hours.
Another option for returning items is to use our return boxes. These are located outside the library and are, therefore, available to you during the sometimes longer opening hours of the buildings. The Boxgraben branch library does not have a return box for you.
Please note the following regarding the use of the return boxes:
- The returned media will only be booked back on the next working day. Therefore, please return your books no later than one working day before the deadline! Late returns will incur a fee.
- Drop items into the box with caution! Please place books with their spines facing downwards into the slot.
- No drop-off of interlibrary loans, keys and oversized media.
- You will not receive a receipt at the return box.
- The borrower is personally responsible for the return of the items. Please do not place any books on top of the return box when it is full.
Self-Service
During opening hours, you can borrow and return media all by yourself. All you need is your FH Karte and your PIN. Your PIN is preset to your date of birth DDMM and can be changed in your library account.
Please place your media on the glass top of the self-service terminal. The bookings are made automatically and are shown to you on the display.
No FH Karte is required when returning media items.
After the booking has been completed, you will receive your booking voucher either as a printout or by email.
Borrowing media via the self-service terminal is not possible...
- for media from the non-lending collection
- for media from course reserves
- for media borrowed via interlibrary loan
- if your library account has been blocked
In the above cases, please consult the staff at the circulation desk.
