Biotechnology at FH Aachen is Future-oriented and Practical

Along with digitalisation, AI, climate and energy, biotechnology is one of the important future fields that open up exciting opportunities. As a key technology, it improves many areas of our daily lives with the production of biopharmaceuticals, industrial protein production, food technology and innovations in the bioeconomy.
In our degree programme, you will not only learn about the most important areas of modern biotechnology in theory. Located directly on our campus, you will be educated in in-house laboratory practical trainings working on interesting and interdisciplinary projects. In the BIOPioneer teaching project, for example, you will research your own biotechnological tasks from the second to the fifth semester. You will work in a team on your developing practical project and deal with exciting topics such as

  • the genetic modification of microorganisms with the aim of producing biotechnological products
  • the production of enzymes or antibodies with the help of microorganisms or cell cultures,
  • the application of modern analytical methods for quality control of a biotechnological process chain.

In addition to your studies, you can design, experience and "taste" biotechnology in a very practical way in the Brau-AG.

Info Video

This video from the HIT 2022 University Information Day gives you a first insight into our degree programme! You will learn what biotechnology actually is, which areas there are, what it looks like at our university and how the degree programme is structured.

Biotechnology at FH Aachen is Versatile

In the course of your studies, you will learn how broad the range of topics in biotechnology is. You will gradually immerse yourself intensively in the diversity of biotechnology with the help of the knowledge imparted in the basic natural science and engineering subjects. In order to obtain a good overall understanding, essential business skills and basic regulations of biotechnology are also taught. The aim of biotechnological processes is to specifically modify living organisms or their metabolic processes in such a way that a desired product is produced or a certain process path is followed. Therefore, superordinate subjects such as biochemistry, microbiology, genetic engineering, instrumental analysis, downstream processing and bioinformatics impart the knowledge that is important for all biotechnological issues. No matter in which direction you orientate yourself later, you will realise that the interdisciplinary education offers you all the opportunities for an optimal career start.

Medical (Red) Biotechnology

In our Biotechnology degree programme, you will learn about the biotechnological processes used to develop targeted personalised medicines, vaccines and therapies for the treatment of diseases. The biotechnological production of precisely fitting complex molecules such as antibodies, hormones or vaccines in genetically modified cells plays a major role, especially in immunological diseases and cancer.
Typical subjects that can be assigned to the field of Medical Biotechnology of our degree programme are:

  • Immunology
  • Virology
  • Cell Culture Technology
  • Molecular Cell Biology

Industrial (White/Grey) Biotechnology

In addition to a long tradition in fermentative processes in the food industry, biotechnological applications are of great importance in our everyday lives. You will learn that many products, such as detergents, cleaning agents and cosmetics, are produced more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way by using enzymes as biocatalysts. In the future, biotechnology can contribute to society's growing demand for sustainability, for example with industrially produced green hydrogen. Two goals are at the centre of the research activities of industrial biotechnology at FH Aachen: Conventional industrial processes are to be converted to sustainable and resource-saving biotechnological production with environmentally compatible biomaterials. Our expertise in energy production in the form of biogas and hydrogen from biotechnological utilisation of renewable raw materials and residues is to be further developed for industrial applications. In the Biotechnology degree programme, the following subjects will provide you with a more in-depth introduction to the subject of Industrial Biotechnology:

  • Enzyme Technology
  • Bioprocess Engineering

Environmental Biotechnology and Plant Biotechnology (Brown/Green)

In the sub-field of Environmental Biotechnology, you will learn how the processes of biological wastewater treatment, waste treatment, remediation of contaminated sites, exhaust air purification and biogas production work on the basis of microbiological processes. The Plant Biotechnology module of our Biotechnology degree programme introduces you to the methods of plant cultivation, breeding and genetic modification of plants. You will learn how plants can be used as renewable raw materials or how transgenic plants are used to produce pharmaceutical proteins.

Typical subjects you will encounter here are:

  • Environmental Biotechnology
  • Plant Biotechnology
