What does a GRE test score mean?

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test used by many graduate programs worldwide as part of the admissions process. It assesses candidates' abilities in the areas of verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing. You must have scored in the 70th percentile in at least one of the three areas.

What requirements do we place on the GRE test result?

The GRE test score requirements can be found in the admission regulations. An applicant must achieve at least the 70th percentile in one of three areas (Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning or Analytical Writing) in order to fulfill the requirements for the Master Information Systems (please note that achieving this GRE test score alone does not determine admission).

Example of a passing GRE score: You achieve the 75th percentile in Verbal Reasoning, the 65th percentile in Quantitative Reasoning and the 60th percentile in Analytical Writing. Since you exceed the 70th percentile in Verbal Reasoning, you meet the requirements.

Example of a failed GRE score: You achieve the 65th percentile in Verbal Reasoning, the 60th percentile in Quantitative Reasoning and the 68th percentile in Analytical Writing. Since you do not reach the 70th percentile in any of the three areas, you do not meet the requirements.

Relevant degree

In addition to the general admission requirements, admission to the Master's degree courses in Information Systems and Information Systems (part-time) requires the completion of a relevant degree course with a standard period of study of at least six semesters and at least 180 credit points according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ETCS), which has been successfully completed with a Bachelor's degree or another professionally qualifying degree (Diplom etc.). Relevant within the meaning of sentence 1 is a degree in business informatics, computer science, business administration or in the field of digital economy from a German or foreign university.

Required language skills

Proof of English language skills

All applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency through a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Cambridge Certificate in English (FCE). The following minimum scores are required:

  • IELTS 6.5 (min. 6.0 for each subtest)
  • TOEFL paper based 580+ with TWE 4.5 or internet based overall score 92 (min. 20 per section)
  • Cambridge Certificate in English (FCE), Grade B2

English language skills can also be recognized by submitting an equivalent certificate. The selection committee will decide on equivalence. If you are not sure whether your equivalent proof is sufficient, please send a request for forwarding to the selection committee.

Exceptions and German language skills

Applicants whose native language is English or who have completed their first professionally qualifying university degree at an English-speaking university or in an English-language degree program are exempt from the requirement to provide proof of English language skills.
German language skills do not have to be proven, but are recommended. As part of the curriculum, some compulsory elective modules are only available in German. Students without knowledge of German therefore have a limited choice of elective modules. Nevertheless, the entire structure of the study program is designed in such a way that it is possible to study the entire program in English without any further restrictions.

  2. Certificates or transcripts of previous university education, issued by the relevant Examination Office, with a provisional average grade or final grade and a complete list of subjects and transcripts of records.
  3. Module descriptions of the relevant modules completed for the first professionally qualifying degree.
  4. Certificate of Graduate Record Examination Test (GRE) scores for applications that have not obtained their degree in a member state of the European Higher Education Area EHEA.
  5. Completed table for the assessment of academic aptitude (in the application portal)

Special regulations for current degree programmes

If your current university degree programme has not yet been fully completed at the time of application, missing certificate documents can be replaced for the time being by a transcript of records certified by the university. This grade transcript must contain a provisional average grade and must not be older than four weeks before the application deadline. A maximum of 40 credits may be missing until graduation.

Please note that in this case the average grade will be reduced by 0.2 grade points if the certificate does not include a final thesis with colloquium or defence and all other examinations have been completed. In this case, the determination of professional aptitude is initially provisional. The missing documents must be submitted subsequently for the final determination of your aptitude.
