Legal Basis
FH Aachen is committed to the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In addition, it must fulfil all the requirements of the SGB IX. By identifying and gradually dismantling existing barriers, it is continuing to develop into a university that is recognisably inclusive for all members of the university. All university members will benefit from this development: Because the removal of barriers, the gain in perspectives and the appreciation of diversity create a significant scientific, educational and social added value.
As a university, we must take all necessary steps to ensure that our employees can work without barriers.
There are a number of legal foundations for people with impairments to ensure that they can lead a self-determined and independent life.
Federal Disability Equality Act
(§ 3, Persons with disabilities)
Persons with disabilities within the meaning of this Act are persons who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with attitudinal and environmental barriers, may prevent them from participating in society on an equal basis with others. Long-term is defined as a period that is likely to last longer than six months.
Disability equality laws of the Länder
The Disability Equality Acts of the Länder are based on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities or the Federal Disability Equality Act.
Book 9 of the Social Code (§ 2 paragraph 1 SGB IX)
Persons with disabilities are persons who have physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with attitudinal and environmental barriers, are likely to prevent them from participating in society on an equal basis for longer than six months. An impairment according to sentence 1 exists if the physical and health condition deviates from the condition typical for the person's age. People are at risk of disability if an impairment according to sentence 1 is to be expected."
Social Code Book 9 (§ 2 paragraph 2 SGB IX).
"People are severely disabled within the meaning of Part 3 (of Book IX of the Social Code) if they have a degree of disability of at least 50 and their place of residence, habitual abode or employment in a job within the meaning of section 156 is lawfully within the scope of this Code."
UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Art. 24 para. 5 UNCRPD)
"States Parties shall ensure that persons with disabilities have access, without discrimination and on an equal basis with others, to general higher education, vocational training, adult education and lifelong learning. To this end, States Parties shall ensure that reasonable accommodation is provided for persons with disabilities."

University examination regulations must in particular regulate: [...] the content, the qualification objective, the form of teaching, the prerequisites for participation, the workload and the duration of the examination achievements of the modules; provisions shall be made to compensate for disadvantages for disabled students [...]."

"The institutions of higher education shall cooperate in the social promotion of students; they shall take into account the special needs of students with children. They shall ensure that disabled students are not disadvantaged in their studies and are able to take advantage of the offers of the higher education institution without outside assistance as far as possible. [...]"

"Examination Regulations must take into account the special needs of disabled students in order to safeguard their equal opportunities."
