Digital university teaching

Digital media offer great potential for teaching and learning. For this reason, digital media have been used at FH Aachen for more than two decades to support student learning.

Graduates must be able to act in a digital society. This also changes the requirements for their competence profiles. Digitalisation therefore influences both the "how" and the "what" of teaching.

Learning and teaching at FH Aachen are supported by the provision and use of a wide variety of media. In doing so, they serve many different didactic functions. In addition to the programmes and applications used in the respective fields of work, the learning management system ILIAS and the communication tool Webex are particularly worth mentioning. ILIAS is a very powerful tool with many application possibilities. In order to open up the potentials of using digital media and ILIAS in particular for lecturers, the FH Aachen has set up support in the form of learning modules and advice as well as support. In addition, it promotes more elaborate lighthouse projects for the digitalisation of teaching with financial resources and didactic-technical support. Some lecturers use virtual or augmented reality solutions, for example, for virtual laboratory instruction or construction site visits.

FH Aachen is also intensively involved in the activities of the Digital University NRW: In networking with teachers from other universities, Open Educational Content is created here - i.e. digital teaching and learning materials that can be used and further developed by everyone. In addition, there is the opportunity to participate in the cross-university continuing education programme HD@DH.nrw - Teaching in the Digital Age.

With regard to the changed competence profiles for graduates, the teachers at the UAS are in continuous exchange: the UAS has established processes that ensure that the competence profiles meet the current requirements of the labour market and society, from exchange with industry advisory boards to graduate surveys and the examination of the state of research on the topic. The topic of "digitalisation" is one of three strategic focal points of FH Aachen and is given correspondingly strong consideration in the regular further development of the curricula.
