Optimal Preparation for Career Entry or a Doctorate
After completing a Master's degree in Biotechnology, students have the option to work in numerous industries. The knowledge and skills acquired can be used in research & development and in the manufacture of products for the fields of health, chemistry, nutrition and environmental technology, among others. Jobs await biotechnologists in the laboratory, in production, but also in sales or quality assurance. They can find jobs both in the public and in the private sector. By completing a doctorate after their Master's degree, they can gain further qualifications and occupy management positions.
In their professional environment, biotechnologists have to cooperate intensively with other natural scientists such as chemists, physicists and physicians. At the same time, they have to work with experts from technical disciplines such as facility and mechanical engineers, process engineers as well as with business economists and lawyers. Working at the interface of many sub-disciplines requires a very high level of teamwork and communicative skills.
The Evolution of the Biotechnology Sector
Worldwide, the biotechnology industry has been growing continuously and sustainably for years. In 2021, German biotechnology grew more strongly than ever before (+279 % increase in turnover compared to the previous year) (source: German Biotechnology Report 2022, Ernst & Young GmbH).
This innovative industry is looking for innovative minds.
More than 700 biotech companies in Germany are continuing to increase the number of employees, reaching 46,000 in 2021 (3.1% more than in 2020). This means that the sector is still on a continuous growth path.
Therapeutics development tops Germany's biotech turnover. For biopharmaceuticals alone, it rose to around 16.1 billion Euros. This corresponds to a growth of 10.2%. Medical biotechnology in particular has an increasing demand for skilled workers.
