Registering the FH Karte

After registering your FH Karte, you can borrow media from all four branch libraries (located at Bayernallee, Boxgraben, Eupener Straße and Jülich).

Self-Service

You can borrow or return media via the self-check-out terminals. During service hours, you are welcome to consult our staff regarding any services or with any questions you may have. Outside service hours, the libraries are supervised by a security service.

Payment Stations

You can also pay your library fees or printing costs without cash at the payment stations. For this, please use the payment function of your FH Karte.

Loan Periods

In total, we have about 180,000 media units for you to borrow. With a few exceptions, the media are freely accessible. You can take the media from the shelves and borrow them.
The loan periods are usually 4 weeks. Please note the end of the loan period indicated on your loan receipt. Only the period stated there is binding! If there is no reservation, the loan period can be renewed.

Book Return Boxes

Return boxes are available in the entrance area of the buildings Bayernallee, Eupener Straße and Jülich for contactless return of media. We do not empty the boxes until the following day. This may result in charges.

Renewals and Reservations

Personally, by Phone, or Online

You can renew loan periods. The new loan period usually ends 4 weeks after the renewal date. It is not renewed automatically. You can renew personally on site or by telephone during service hours or you can use the online renewal service via your library account (renewal requests by email only in exceptional cases, please).

However, if the media are reserved by other persons, the loan period will not be renewed.

The media items must be presented at the library after 24 weeks at the latest.

For interlibrary loans, the loan periods are set by the lending library. You cannot renew interlibrary loans online.

For your thesis, you can request an extended loan period.

Reserving Borrowed Media

For this service, you must log in to Catalogue PLUS (see "Library Account").

In the single hit display, you will be informed whether you can reserve the item.

You will be notified when the media item has arrived at the requested pick-up location. Members of FH Aachen always receive their notifications via the official FH Aachen email account.

Shelf Arrangement

The shelf arrangement goes from left to right, from the top shelf to the bottom shelf, with the next shelf unit following in the same order.

The shelving is arranged according to the media number, i.e. first according to the letter combinations, then according to the consecutive book number.

The shelving system arranges all subject areas from the general to the specific. The basis of our media listing is the GHBS (shelf classification of the comprehensive university libraries of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia).

This ensures that you will find literature on the same topic in the same place in the library.

When "surfing" the shelves, you will only find the printed stock that is not out on loan. All media, including borrowed and electronic media, can be found in Catalogue PLUS.

Acquisition Requests

Your Literature is Our Job

If you are missing something in our stock, you are welcome to let us know. You can make acquisition requests for the purchase of new (text) books and other media.

There are several ways to do this:

  • in person - simply hand in your acquisition request to the staff in one of our branch libraries.
  • online - fill out the acquisition form on our website.

If the item is not already available in the holdings or on order, the desired title will be procured within the framework of our acquisition guidelines and - if requested by you - it will be reserved for you. If the title is already available, we will inform you immediately and make the item available to you.

The university library only acquires media that are required for the purposes of teaching, studying, research and development, artistic and creative tasks as well as further education of the specialisations found at FH Aachen. You can find more information on the homepage.

Your literature is our job!

We are happy to receive any suggestions:
